Shildon

all about Shildon

Tollerance reminded me of the times we used to slide down the snow covered grass banks on bin bags, freezing cold and soaked to the skin but WOW they were great times.
Favourite downhill run was down the lines in a field on the Darlington bound side, just past the Cattle bridge.
We [usually Dalton Cres mob] would beg steel borrow any fertiliser/bin bag we could find and head off East. Dressed in whatever your playing out clothes were, couple of pair of socks and your fathers wellies oh and if you were posh or had a grannie who could knit a pair of woollen gloves.
Oh yes what fun we had before PC's and game stations were around, kids these days eh, they just divvint na thee born.

you've set me off now. capt`n jack ,bearded ole pie-rate and I went to the flicks, oh back in 1975/6ish to watch some old borrowing film I forget what BUT if you remember back then you always got a starter Film of some sort. Ours was on the Skateboard scene in the USA. That was it hooked well and truly.
Back home we cut a roller skate in half and nailed a plank across it. Off to Jessy Harolds car park and YES many wipe outs and ripped clothes later we decided buying one would probably be a safer bet. Trouble was we just couldn't turn the damn thing. Found out why when Jack came down with THE FIRST SKATEBOARD, our roller skate had no trucks [turning device] as it was one of your cheepies [probably out of a lucky bag] [lucky bag now there's another story] ;-)
Years of skateboarding fun later until we retired, BUT then back in 2005 we came out of retirement one early morning [2AM] after a session down Bushys tent Isle of Man TT. I borrowed a couple of my sons boards and we trundled over to the skatepark in Douglas I.O.Man. Campers were sound asleep in the field nearby when loud cries of "AH #UCK" and "B#ST=RD THAT HURT" could be heard for oh about ten mins, which is about how long it took the campers to threaten to insert our boards somewhere painful.

Yes but even we were smart enough to know they would go TOO fast to control. An old stiff plastic sack was good enough for me (although one of my brothers used to slide down ballas bank in old long tin bath) - winter ice or mud - made no difference.

can anyone remember rex`s brothr Mike trying to ride down one of the slag heaps and up the other side , dont think he knew there was a little stream between the two heaps , (shildon`s evil kin`ell or whatever that yank was called). it goes without saying the bike and rider did`nt make it in the same shape they started , seem to remember the front wheel became a second back wheel , but hey that was mike
